To visit the Hot Springs of Atotonilco for
a half-day excursion we're going to leave "Las Hadas" around 8.00am
after a nice and healthy breakfast. We head towards San Jose Manialtepec
approximately 12 Kilometers (7 Miles) from Las Hadas and cross the
river with the car. We still head north and leave the car at the
next river crossing.
There are now 2 options: You could walk with the group to the hot
springs of Atotonilco which will take approximately 1 hour or you
could book a ride on horse-backs which will then take approximately
25 minutes. In any case we still have to cross the river 5 times
and you need sandals and shorts as sometimes we're going to walk
through 3-feet-deep water. This trip will not be possible between
July and November as then the Manialtepec river will carry too much
water.
We pass a papaya plantation and shall walk along meadows with lots
of cattle - cows and donkeys - will see lots of birds and will pass
a deserted rancho. After more or less one hour we're going to reach
the hot sulfuric springs. There's a prayer palapa on the site with
an altar for the "Virgen de los Milagros" (the Madonna of the miracles)
who shall make it happen, that this healing water cures all your
pain.
The springs are - for our opinion - too hot to step inside. We're
going to take bowls with us to pour this water over the body - it's
extremely healthy water - very sulfuric and very much healing -
quiet good for the skin. While we're going to develop this excursion
we might be able to offer massage if there's enough participiants
to book the massage too. We'll spend some time on site and you could
donate to the virgin de los milagros if you'd like and we'll slowly
head back towards the car and shall be back at Las Hadas for Lunch
time.
